![]() I haven't had time to go to any of the concerts, but I think it's cool that more cons are getting more interesting entertainment than just video rooms. Fan panels are my favorites, especially ones with games. I like making friends with other cosplayers and going to genre/series-specific panels and meeting fellow fans. I do happen to be a cosplayer and do enjoy finding cool merchandise. I only recently learned about a more local con, Anime Conji here in San Diego which I'm going to check out next year. I go to Anime Expo in the LA area every year if I can. There are also some really nice people there that you might never have met outside of the convention scene. But I have a great time, and that might be because I go with a group of friends who are just as into it as I am. I can definitely see why people won't enjoy them, and sometimes there's organization problems. The dealer room is huge, and while some shops will sell the same things, that just means you can go around and look for the best price.Ĭons are different for everyone. And I'm usually really happy with what they have. I don't really cosplay, so like megatronical, one of the reasons I go to a con is for the merchandise. ACen's slogan is 'Got Soap?' so while there are those people who don't shower enough, I don't notice a huge con funk smell. There are indeed people who don't fit the body type associated with the character they're cosplaying as, but if they worked hard on their costume, I don't see why they shouldn't be able to show it off. While the first 2 years will always be the best, I still enjoy going for the atmosphere and for the chance of making new friends. I've been to Anime Central for the past 5 years, and I love it. Tl dr I don't really see what the benefits are of going to a con, personally at least.ĮDIT: Probably should have mentioned the con's I'd been to, Anime North and Fan Expo However, I could get in and out and see pretty much everything there in a few hours and be done with it, which is probably what I'll do in the future if I ever attend one again. The thing that probably made my attendance bearable the times I've gone were the artist areas though, because you can pick up things that aren't anywhere else, and really cool stuff sometimes. ![]() When it comes down to it, I guess I just like anime more than anime fans, or at least the type I've run in to and interacted with going to cons. The constant whiffs of putrid BO in massive crowds is definitely something I could go without experiencing ever again in my life. ![]() It's like some people just aren't familiar with the concept of bathing. The worst thing by far though in my experiences were the smells. Panels and group watches were alright as well, but not as in depth as the discussion that you can get in other mediums like forums, and I didn't really see the value add of doing it in person, but maybe I'm just a big antisocial jerk. If I was in to the cosplay aspect of the fandom at all I could see the appeal as well, but I'm not, so I wasn't. If I lived in a less convenient place I could see why having everything together in one place would be nice but I was mostly under-whelmed. That's not to say that might be true for everyone, but the main reason I'd go to a con personally (outside of being dragged there by friends) is for merchandise, and there was basically nothing there that I couldn't have found for cheaper through local stores or online. I always had a negative view of cons when I got in to the 'fandom', and now having been to a couple now over the past few years, I can safely say that everything negative that I had thought about beforehand was basically true. ![]()
